ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

Safer Roads Sooner Acceleration (SRSA) Projects

DKS Consulting has previously been engaged on several SRSA Projects for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Metro Region.

DKS can undertake designs for safety deficiencies from the Road Safety Audit (RSA) Report supplied to DKS or alternatively have suitably qualified auditors within the business to undertake safety audits.

The scope of work for these Projects generally included the following:

• At intersections – lane re-configuration and channelisation including road widening and traffic islands, traffic signals, street lighting, pavement markings and signage, skid resistance improvement measures, increasing right-turn lane storage lengths, reconfiguration of high speed left-turn slip lanes to high-angle entry lanes;

• Along roadways – safety barriers (guardrail), improving sight distance (e.g. trimming of roadside vegetation) for vehicles both on the roadway and entering the roadway from private accesses, horizontal geometry and cross sectional improvements.

The following scope of services were delivered by DKS:

• Carry out site inspections, including joint inspections with TMR personnel, to observe traffic behavior and identify potential safety deficiencies in the road infrastructure. Some site inspections took the form of formal Road Safety Audits in accordance with TMR’s standard procedures and required the preparation of Road Safety Audit Reports, including the prioritising and costing of recommended improvements. In other cases, DKS carried out the design and documentation of recommended improvements identified in Road Safety Audit Reports prepared by others;

• Analysis of traffic accident data supplied by TMR thereby enabling us to appreciate the locations, types, severity and causes of accidents

• Identification and preliminary design of safety improvement options;

• Attend project review meetings with TMR to discuss and agree on the preferred safety improvement measures to be adopted;

• Final drawings and schedules of quantities using TMR’s Work Management System (WMS) for the purposes of inviting Tenders.

Following is a selection of some of the SRSA Projects that DKS has undertaken for TMR
Metro including a brief description of the safety measures implemented:

Moreton Bay Road / Mount Cotton Road Intersection (Capalaba):
Conversion of existing left-slip lanes to high angle entry lanes on two approaches including pavement widening, reconfiguration of splitter islands, re-location of footpath, signage and light pole, and new road markings;
High-friction road surface treatment provided on two approaches.

Bloomfield Road / South Street Intersection (Cleveland):
Extension of right-turn lane storage length on two approaches including associated street lighting.

Warrego Highway / Villis Road Intersection:
Elimination of conflicts between high-speed highway traffic and local side road traffic at an existing 4-way intersection by implementing a left-in, left-out only movement from the minor side roads (including acceleration lanes) and a complementary U-turn facility for local traffic at a nearby tee-intersection;
The above included pavement widening, channelisation works, signage and road markings.

Cleveland – Redland Bay Road (km0.00 to km15.36) (Cleveland):
Anti-skid treatment to selected roundabouts;
Improve available sight-distance at intersections by trimming roadside vegetation;
Relocate pedestrian crossings (e.g. fencing, kerb ramps and median islands);
Improved signage and pavement marking;
New guardrail installation.

Mount Cotton Road (km1.50 to km2.60) (Capalaba):
Improved road delineation through signage and pavement marking;
Removal of selected trees and new guardrail installation;
AC overlay to improve sub-standard super-elevation at selected curve;
Responsible for RSA.

Old Cleveland Road (km1.50 to km2.60) (Capalaba):
Removal of selected trees and new guardrail installation.

Redland Bay – Mount Cotton Road
DKS was engaged by CGI Consulting Pty Ltd on behalf of TMR to conduct a Road Safety Audit on a section of Redland Bay Road (110) from km 1.5 to 2.6km commonly known as Mount Cotton Road. The section of road that was audited was from the Greenacres Caravan Park to the intersection of Lyndon Road with the exclusion of the Lyndon Road Intersection.

DKS made use of the existing survey data supplied by DRM to determine the deficiencies of the road geometry and to provider sketches where relevant. At the conclusion of the study DKS submitted a Road Safety Report and using the recommendations from the report, a Design Report was developed to outline the major recommendations to be implemented.
